Some Thoughts on Global Warming...

The recent hysteria over global warming has got me all worked up...so, here are some quick thoughts.

1. If carbon dioxide emissions truly are the cause of global warming, then there is nothing Canada can do about it. The Chinese are building about 400 coal-fired power plants over the next 20 years..and thus reductions in our 2-percent share of emissions will do nothing. In addition to the Chinese, the Indians are also in the process of rapidly expanding their economic base...and dare I even mention the Brazilians or the Koreans.

2. The logical outgrowth of a belief that carbon dioxide causes global warming will be a call for nuclear energy. It is the ONLY source of energy that can power our industrial base. Wind power and solar power just won't cut it. Environmentalists are going to have to come to grips with the fact that more nuclear power is in our future (and many are doing just that).

3. If you are truly alarmed at global warming, then how come we don't have hundreds of committees examining how Canada should adapt to it. The plain fact of the matter is that the Earth IS warming (although slower than the original IPCC reports claim) and that we WILL have to adapt to it. So, where is the planning?

4. Lastly, if we have to spend $100 billion on global warming, should we spend it on trying to avoid it...or should we spent it on adapting to it? Isn't the latter action the ONLY viable choice?

Monsieur Stephane Dion has shown leadership on Kyoto, combatting Global Warming and Climate Change.

The Harper government, on the otherhand, plays into the hands of the big petroleum companies, the automobile industry and GW Bush. He's recking havoc on the environment, and his conversion to environmentalism is a farse! Nobody in Canada believes him.

It's time for real environmental leadership in Canada. It's time to bring back the Liberals to power.

Let's see a 13.4 billion cheque to the Rssian Mafia, shut down of 30% of the Canadian economy resulting in the collapse of the Medical system, EI, and no money for welfare. I think the west just leaves and let Dion lead his like in whats left, American branch plant Ontario and a Socialist Quebec feeding off the branch. How can so many people live in such a dream world...? I travel all over and you have it right about China but thats just the tip of the iceberg...read 10.9% annual growth speeded up by our stupidity under Kyoto...They won't need guns!! Oh yes heard one Lib say well there's a well organized Environmental group in China...Yes I was there when they had a more active Democratic movement..amazing how bullets/reality made us run from that committment. Meet you under Lady Liberty next time!!!!!

The Kyoto scheme would bankrupt Canada, it's obvious the Liberals have no intention of honouring what they signed us up for, but since they rarely work in Canada's interest in the first place they have no problem using Liberal failures to attack the government.

No one can yet explain any of the Ice Ages or warm periods in earth's history - yet these politicians can tell us what the weather will be like a hundred years from now? Fools.

Oh no its much worse than we thought our impact is not just here on Earth but..."Martian snow turns out to be rock hard. Worse it is melting away at an alarming rate. In fact, Mars may be in the midst of a period of profound climate change".....Of course this is caused by humans we have the "word"...now what..who pays those credits...With Dion the big expert maybe send him with his follow believers ....maybe they can green Mars with Kyoto like credits!!

1. "No snowflake in an avalanche ever feels responsible." -Stanisław Jerzy Lec

We must do our part, and do our best to help (if not make) others do their part to ensure both our and their survival.

2. Nuclear power is good. Even dams, which destroy ecosystems, are better than fossil fuels (they're not going to kill us as quickly). There's also wave power, wind power, biomass burning via fermentation, tidal power, geothermal power, and the classic solar power. Not so much hydrogen IMHO.

Any of these things will keep us humans from dying as quickly.

You say nuclear power is the only answer, which might be true for cities, but the self-sustaining house is the ultimate answer, both economically and environmentally.

3. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Environmental_organizations_based_in_Canada

If you don't know about any groups, it is only, ONLY, ONLY because you haven't even looked for them. Google would be a good place to start. But why you would think that every concerned citizen in Canada would start their own environmental group when he or she became concerned is beyond my logic.

Canadians already know what they need to do for the environment; the planning has already been shown to us. Use greener cars, ask your energy company for greener power (like we have from SaskPower here in Saskatchewan), reduce, reuse, recycle... You know where this is going.

4. NO!!! If an animal was going to bite you, would you shoot it in the head, or get some Band-Aids ready?

The answer is we shoot it, but prepare for the consequences should we miss.

Garth Turner's announcment, today, that he is going to join the Liberal Party of Canada's parliamentary caucus is further proof about how dangerous the Harper government is on the issues of the environment.

Turner will help to bring needed support to Monsieur Dion's team Liberal. Turner's turning to the Liberals will help to seal the fact that they are the next government of Canada; its only a matter of time till the next election.

Harper's days are severely numbered.

He's going to be in power another 666 days?

Hey TTVC, you didn't answer any of Fred's points at all.

(I do not believe that Harper's conversion to environmentalism has anything to so with Iran as you seem to imply.)

1. Because those problems are much harder to solve, they dont get as much recognition. They do need to be dealt with. Also, it conflicts with another noble goal, eliminating poverty - the standard approach to this is to industralise poorer countries and improve their economy.

2. Nuclear power is becoming more popular, even with the environmental groups who are traditionally opposed to it.

3. Politics. Not as bad in Canada as it is in the US, but still a factor.

4. In the long term, adaption is the only option. But spending some on reducing emmisions will at least buy time, and reduce the severity of the problem.

Suricou Raven: Spending money on lowering emissions won't do a thing. Just a waste of money - since the Chinese, the Indians, the Brazilians, and the Koreans won't be reducing their emissions. We're going to just piss money down the toilet. For nothing.

@GayandRight:

Agreed. On the other hand, there are other ways to get the same results, such as imposing taxes on poor environmental habits and giving tax breaks on good environmental habits.

You know, break even. Win-win?
