Some Thoughts on Global Warming...
The recent hysteria over global warming has got me all worked up...so, here are some quick thoughts.
1. If carbon dioxide emissions truly are the cause of global warming, then there is nothing Canada can do about it. The Chinese are building about 400 coal-fired power plants over the next 20 years..and thus reductions in our 2-percent share of emissions will do nothing. In addition to the Chinese, the Indians are also in the process of rapidly expanding their economic base...and dare I even mention the Brazilians or the Koreans.
2. The logical outgrowth of a belief that carbon dioxide causes global warming will be a call for nuclear energy. It is the ONLY source of energy that can power our industrial base. Wind power and solar power just won't cut it. Environmentalists are going to have to come to grips with the fact that more nuclear power is in our future (and many are doing just that).
3. If you are truly alarmed at global warming, then how come we don't have hundreds of committees examining how Canada should adapt to it. The plain fact of the matter is that the Earth IS warming (although slower than the original IPCC reports claim) and that we WILL have to adapt to it. So, where is the planning?
4. Lastly, if we have to spend $100 billion on global warming, should we spend it on trying to avoid it...or should we spent it on adapting to it? Isn't the latter action the ONLY viable choice?
